Crummy manufacturing and production data and continued weakness in housing data were not stopping buyers today. At least not until the last 90 minutes when we saw selling take away the triple digit gains in the DJIA. This looked like another day where bulls were washing out the bears until late-day from a DJIA financial component took much of the wind out of the sails today. But the tech-heavy NASDAQ was in negative territory most of the day. Here were today’s unofficial closing bell levels:

Nevertheless, this is Wall Street’s newest game. It’s called an absolute-return fund. Big names like Putnam Investments of Boston and Goldman Sachs Absolute Return Tracker Fund are some of the players. They are telling you: “Look we know that mutual funds take only long positions. We are going to change that. We are going to trade your money just like a hedge fund. So. we’ll go long some stocks and we’ll go short some stocks. Why, we are going to include the really wild movers like commodities, currencies, international investments, real estate, managed futures, cash, bonds, and assorted derivatives.” Yes, you heard that right: “assorted derivatives.”

Like so many others, you probably wanted to be a fly on the wall when Warren Buffet gave his fourth-quarter report to shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE BRK.A). Well, here’s the bad news: Net profit fell 96%, the fifth quarterly straight decline and Berkshire’s net worth dropped a whopping $10.9 billion dollars in the final three months of 2008.

One of the saddest stories to come out of the Bernie Madoff saga is that of Elie Wiesel. The Holocaust survivor, Nobel Laureate and activist saw nearly all of the assets of his foundation wiped out in the Ponzi scheme. Wiesel also lost a huge chunk of his personal wealth.
“This was a personal tragedy where we discovered all of a sudden what we had done in 40 years - my books, my lectures, everything - was gone,” he said at a panel discussion on Thursday. Read the rest of this entry »
